Disclaimer: I don't understand a word of Turkish
It's very rare that I end up enjoying hip hop in languages that I don't speak, and I've always blamed it on the productions. While lyrics are important, the base of the music in hip hop for me has always been about the beats and effective productions will make any rapper sound good. And while I enjoy good lyricism too, it's always just that extra that pushes an album over the edge. In the last few years I've been wondering if my stance was wrong, maybe I didn't enjoy these albums because not understanding any words made the music pretty annoying? Well Anti-Kahraman proves to me my original point, give me banging beats and I'll probably enjoy it.
I've heard Farazi beats prior to this (on the 2013 collaboration album with Kayra) and that album showed potential, but I feel that he really stepped it up on this project with pure boom bap bangers. These are some pure head nodders with really strong drum loops, reminiscent of the mid 90s sound or the early-mid 00s underground wave. Each and every beat is damn heavy and hits hard, this is just how I like my boom bap! The production is really strong throughout, and I think that anyone that likes boom bap like this could enjoy the beats.
When it comes to the rapping, well like I said I don't understand what is being said. However I can recognize a good voice and a good flow, and Sorgu is a pretty talented rapper in that aspect. The rapping is pleasant and having this album in rotation I've even started to memorize the sound of the lyrics, even thought I still have no idea what they mean (my guess is that floats around conscious hip hop from the vibes). The rapping is as good as it can be for some outsider like me, and I think I can still enjoy it just following the flow of the rapping but of course I'm missing the magic from the meaning of the words together.
Despite all that, I'll say that Anti-Kahraman is one of my favorite hip hop albums of 2020. Farazi knocks it out of the park with the beats, there's not quite many albums released this year that just gets my head nodding one song after the other. The rapping is enjoyable enough and definitely not a detriment to the music, the whole thing sounds like hip hop from the past when boom bap reigned supreme and I love that. It might be a hard sell for non-Turkish speakers but the beats are just so undeniable right from the first drum kick and to be honest I was hooked instantly.
